The Story of the Origins of the Mul Mantra

The Mul Mantra is the opening of Japji Sahib, the first composition in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of the Sikhs. The Guru Granth is the last and only living Guru today. And it is not simply a book.

According to legend, at around the age of 31, Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru, went to the Kali Bein River near Sultanpur Lodhi to bathe and meditate. He disappeared beneath the water for three days.

When Guru Nanak reappeared, his first words were the opening phrase of the Mul Mantra — “Ik Ong Kar” (“There is One Creator”). These words marked his direct union with the Divine. He then recited all the verses of Japji Sahib.

For a long time, these verses existed only as sacred hymns and were passed down orally from one generation to the next.

Japji Sahib addresses every possible challenge a person may encounter on their journey: from material prosperity to protection from “demons” and liberation from karma carried through generations. Everything a person may face is addressed in one of the 40 pauris of Japji Sahib.

And it all begins with the root — the root of all mantras and the root of all existence: the Mul Mantra. It proclaims the oneness of all things.
